What Larra aimed for, and what Spanish philosophers under his influence aimed for, are infinitely close to “Spirituality Civilization.” That is why Spanish philosophy can be a bridge to the future. ――― Shigyo Sosyu

Entitled [Larra in between Love and Death], life and works of the first journalist in Spain, Mariano José de Larra (1809-1837) will be published in Japan for the first time, in an independently-edited・first translation book in early April. Preface and recommendation by Shigyo Sosyu, translation by Abe Misaki.

Radical libertarian Larra (1809-1837) is said to be Spain’s first journalist. Larra, who had a great influence as a symbolic existence for intellectuals who formed patriotic philosophy and thought, including Unamuno. And he was born in war-torn Spain, which was invaded by the French Revolution・Napoleon’s army.

In order to improve the turbulent Spanish nation where established-conceptions were collapsing, he criticized the backwardness of politics, culture and mentality with fierce satire, and fought with a pen sword to enlighten the people. After that, he was embroiled in power struggle, lost an adulterous love, committed suicide with a pistol at the age of 27, and determined the later Spanish literature.

[The Rise of the Meritocracy] a masterpiece written by a British sociologist Michael Young in 1958, became a bestseller in Britain at that time, and translated into 7 languages is republished from Kodansha Editorial Ltd., and newly equipped with commentary by Shigyo Sosyu.

The term “Meritocracy” is also expressed as “Ability-ism,” and “Merit-system.” And Michael Young is the one who explained this concept as the social phenomena for the first time and published it in a book. This masterpiece revealing virtue and vice of equality and meritocracy which form the basis of democracy, and its intrinsic nature through this concept will be republished after the lapse of 40 years.

“Indeed, this book is old. (…) This book was written in the period after World War II and the start of post-war democracy. That is why, the author sensed the intrinsic dream in the future, and at the same time must have perceived its essential vice. It is no exaggeration to say that [Syoshin (Original intention)] of Democracy has given birth to this book. Now we must go back to the original intention. If not the present people, shall lose the ability to create the future]

Toshima Yasumasa studied in Musashino Art University and after graduation served as an assistant and deeply cherished his alma mater, Musabi. When he entered, Aso Saburo and Yamaguchi Takeo were professors and he seemed to have been the favorite with them. Yamaguchi Takeo particularly supported Toshima mentally in his most agonizing imbroglios. Toshima often visited Yamaguchi’s home and asked advices on his distresses.
This booklet is the documenting of the conversations of the two, recorded by Toshima under the permission of Yamaguchi Takeo. This had been entrusted by Toshima to Shigyo Sosyu in his lifetime. Here the profound dialogue with Yamaguchi Takeo, a man of few words, on his essential view on the Art, his determination to see [Jitsu (Reality)] and close relationship with Saeki Yuzo, et al. are expanded.
